[Community Rhymes Game] [Rebus Stories] [Reader's Theater]  Introduction: During the Book Buddies session, students in Grade 5 help younger children in Grade 2 with their reading. Students always work in the same pairs, which encourages a good relationship to develop, and they spend about thirty minutes each week working together. First of all, Grade 5 students have a book which they read to the younger students. After this, the Grade 2 students read a book that they have chosen to share with their book buddy in the class. Students space themselves out in the classroom and also out in the hallways, sometimes sitting at a desk, sometimes on cushions on the floor. In order to participate in this project all the students in the Grade 5 class were trained in techniques for helping students who are learning to read. As well as being extremely successful in helping the younger children's reading to improve, it has proved to be beneficial to the Grade 5 students too, who have gained in confidence with their own reading and improved through helping someone else.
