A Visit to Barcelona 2
by Maggie Hos-McGrane

Present day Barcelona is built on top of the old Roman city of Barcino. Barcino was a Roman colony in the time of Augustus, and was founded between 15 and 10 B.C. Barcino became a major trading centre and later a centre of wine production using local grapes. Today it is possible to visit the Roman remains which are preserved in the City History Museum, beneath the buildings of Gothic Barcelona.
Later the Visigoths established their home in Barcelona. The city became very rich and influential and in the 3rd and 4th centuries Christianity spread to Barcelona, which became the seat of a powerful bishopric. The beautiful cathedral dates from the 4th century.

The City History Museum has also perserved many of the Gothic buildings from the 13th - 15th centuries and it is possible to visit the Royal Palace, Tinell Hall, St. Agatha's Chapel and King Martin's Tower.
