A Visit to Barcelona 3
by Maggie Hos-McGrane
| In the 19th century, Barcelona grew too large to be contained within the old city walls. They were demolished and a great expansion took place known as L'Eixample. The new style of architecture was known as "modernism" and led to the construction of many interesting houses including those designed by the famous Catalan architect Gaudi. | ![]() |

| The most famous work of Gaudi is the Sagrada Familia, begun in 1883 and still not finished today as Gaudi was run over by a tram in 1926 before it's completion. He hadn't drawn up any blueprints for the cathedral, so architects today are still trying to work out how to finish it! Park Guell, another Gaudi project, is now a public park containing a house where Gaudi lived for many years. | |
