Two of our classmates doing field research for their butterfly project.

Butterflies have many ways of protecting themselves. These include false markings on their wings, color camouflage & chemicals which make it poisonous to eat them.

    Enemies

The enemies of the butterflies are big grasshoppers spiders and some birds. Some butterflies' wing has the color of wild thing. The wild color is for protecting them selves from their enemies. Some butterflies can camouflage themselves for protection.

Eenemies of the butterflies include big grasshoppers spiders and some birds.

    Monarchs

The monarch life cycle has four stages--the egg the larva the pupa and the adult. The monarch will lay its eggs and after four to ten days depending on the weather they will hatch.

The second stage larva has five substages from hatching to molting. The third stage is pupa. The pupa is a large bluish/ greenish skin that covers over the caterpillar like a chrysalis. After 10 to 14 days it is ready to hatch out of the pupa. Now the monarch is ready to go into its 2-6 week summer adulthood which is when it mates.

Soon after the monarch emerges from its pupa it will make an extraordinary journey from Massachusetts to Dallas or from Canada to Mexico. This journey is about 3,750 miles and takes the monarch one-year to complete. Sometimes if a monarch butterfly gets lost it can rarely end up in Europe.

Monarchs' hibernation begins when cold begins to hit; they will then go into a type of hibernation. It almost stops all life functions, but it is warm enough so they won't freeze to death.

Migrations of Monarch butterflies can take up to one year to complete.

The monarchs' enemies include viruses, bacteria, stink bugs, ambush bugs, wasps, mice and birds. Monarchs will protect themselves by a toxic chemical that if a predator eats the butterfly it causes its predators to vomit constantly. This teaches predators to not attack again. These extraordinary creatures are more powerful than we are.

Eating a Monarch butterfly would be a very unpleasant experience for these cats.

    Male & Female Butterflies

You can tell the difference of male and female butterflies by color, shape or size. For example the male large White has a bit of yellow on his wing the female doesn't.

    Feeding

Every kind of butterflies have their favourite thing to eat. Large white likes to eat cabbage, white radish and some kind of flowers.Tortoiseshell likes to drink from lavender.

    Rainy Days

When there are rainy days butterflies will hang upside down on a leaf to protect themselves and their wings from the rain. This way when the butterfly goes to fly their wings are dry and not soggy and wet. This is why you don't see many butterflies out in the mornings.

    Butterflies VS. Moths

Now I'11 tell you about the difference between butterflies and moths. Also here is another school project on the similarities and differences between butterflies and moths.)
    1. Butteflies have smooth, slender body but moths tend to be plump and fuzzy.
    2. Butterflies have wiggled anttenae (not so much) and moths straight.
    3. Almost all butterflies fly from late morning until before early night but moths fly late night as late asmidnight.
    4. Butterflies rest with thier wings upwards and moths spread them out.

There are several differences between moths and butterflies. As part of our project, we decided to take a poll to see which was more popular, butterflies or moths.

Now I collected a very small questionaire to ask which do you like the best, moth or butterfly.
