"Chance Encounters"

The Magic Box

by Ayano and Su Mi

Su Mi's description: Ayano and I made a Magic Box game. The rule was to pick out a card from the box and see if you have won or not. A happy face means you have won and a sad face means you have lost the game.

We thought the probability would be about 50% because the cards were 50 of each, but I think we were a little wrong. There were about 175 wins and 75 losses so I think the actual chance of winning was 75% because we didn't mix up the cards very well. We had cut out some stickes to give to the people who won the game 3 times.

It was very tiring after a while. Lots of people came to our game. There were about 250 of them. I made the cards and Ayano made the box. I liked making the games cards - it was fun. And the whole thing ws very interesting.

Ayano's description: The probability ws 50% because there are 50 cards that win and 50 cards that lose out of 100 cards. The probability is 50% or 0.5 or 1/2 as a percentage, decimal and fraction.

The rule is first you need to close your eyes then pick a card fromthe box. If you got a smiling face care you win, but if you got a sad face you lost.

During the fair I had a nose bleed so sometimes it was confusing how many people came during the nose bleed. And the first boy who came said "I'm in Ms Hoag's class" so I wrote all the other people who came after as being Ms Hoag's students too - that was a big problem during the fair.

The actual results were -

Wins 168 out of 240 or 0.7 or 70% Lose 72 out of 240 or 0.3 or 30%.

Why wasn't it 50%? Because if one person got a win everyone wanted to take the same card and some people were looking in the box so they got winning cards.
