The Day I Was Born
by Giulia

August 16, 1989

My teacher introduced my class to Internet sites where you can find out stuff about yourself by just writing in a blank space when your birthday is and PUFF! you get what you wanted to know.

PERSONAL STATISTICS

Hi! My name is Giulia, and I'm 10 years old. I became 10 years old on August 16, so August 16 1989 is my date of birth. Many people are always trying to figure out many things about themselves (like how old they are in days), but thinking in their heads just doesn't do, so my teacher has introduced my class to where you can find out stuff about yourself by just writing in a blank space when your birthday is and PUFF! you get what you wanted to know. So now, I'm just going to write some summaries of what I found out. First of all, on the date October 1st 1999, I was 3698 days old. On the day I was born, the moon phase was a full moon. My name, spelled either Giulia or Julia, has the meaning of "youthful".

SHARED BIRTHDAYS

Literary figures. The paragraph above was just introducing myself, and some information, but this paragraph is going to start telling about famous people that I share my birthday with. So, let's start with a literary figure who shares the same birthday as me, and this person would be Ted Hughes. He was a very important English poet laureate who wrote poetry books for children and for adults. However he died on October 28 of 1998, and had been born on the 16th of August in 1930. This person is just a start.

Historical figures. I have also been able to find out a historical person from the "New York Times" who would also share a birthday with me, and this person is Shimon Peres. He is a former Israeli Prime Minister and a Foreign Minister. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. Shimon Peres was born August 16th 1923 and is now still alive! (but I don't think he's still a Prime Minister or Foreign Minister!) After this person there's the third person who shares a birthday with me, and I found it out from the History Channel! This person is Menachem Begin. He also was an Israeli Prime Minister, but not like the other person who was also a Foreign Minister, so just wanted to tell you that there is a difference! Anyway, as I was saying Menachem Begin was an Israeli Prime Minister, and one of his greatest accomplishments was to sign a Peace Treaty. For that, he won a Nobel Peace Prize (also like the other person!) in 1978. Menachem Begin was born on August 16th 1913, and died in the year of 1992.

Musical figures. Now, for the last (but not least) person who shares a birthday with me, it has to be a singer, and this person is Madonna. Madonna was born in 1958 and is now still alive. Madonna is not only a singer, who sang songs such as: "Material Girl" or "Like A Virgin", but she was also an actress who did the following movies: "Dick Tracy" (which was out in 1990) or "Desperately Seeking Susan" (which was out in 1985) and the newest and best selling one with Madonna, called "Evita" (in "Evita" Madonna was the star; this one I don't know when it came out!). One of the most interesting things about Madonna is that usually people don't say her last name, however it is Ciccone.

EVENTS OCCURRING ON MY BIRTHDAY

Historical Events. In this paragraph, I am going to introduce to you the events that happened on my birthday. The first event I had to find out had to be again from the "New York Times" and I found 2 events I liked that happened on my birthday, even if they're both sad. The first event is that on August 16th, there became a baseball legend because Babe Ruth died in New York City, aged 53 in 1948. Babe Ruth was a very, very famous baseball player in case you don't know! The second event that happened on my birthday was that the 16th of August in 1977 Elvis Presley died at Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 42. These were the events from the "New York Times" that happened on my birthday, but there's some more events that I'm going to write, but this time from the "History Channel".

So the event is... On August 16th (a very long time ago!) in 1858 the US president, James Buchanan and Queen Victoria exchanged introductory and complimentary messages to make a record of the first transatlantic telegraph line. This telegraph line was done over the Atlantic Ocean, and this is part of the reason this event is so famous. The Morse code was invented by Samuel F. Morse, but I'm not going to say anything about him because he has nothing to do with my birthday!

EVENTS OCCURRING ON MY BIRTHDAY

Entertainment--MusicThe next event is an event I picked out which had to be a musical event, and here it is... In 1955, (in the week of August 16) Elvis Presley released his first number 1 album including the songs: I Forgot To Remember To Forget and Mystery Train. It hit the charts and stayed on there for 5 weeks! His first top 10 song though was Baby Let's Play House also in 1955, but in the summer. To all of you who don't know, Elvis Presley was a rock-and roll singer! here we go, and now we're done with the musical event.

Entertainment--MoviesThe next thing is not an event, it's just showing the movies that were showing in the week I was born, so here they are... "Batman", "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade", "Back to The Future 2" and "Honey I Shrunk The Kids". These were the movies which were being sold in the week of my birthday. Batman, however did have the most success selling over $150.000 tickets, the Indiana Jones sold the next best success, selling $115.000 of tickets, and the rest were all the same selling $72.000 of tickets. However since Batman was the most successful, I'm going to say what it's about, but not much about it. When Bruce Wayne is only 10 years old, his family gets murdered. 25 years later, when he has his secret identity of being Batman, he finds out the person who murdered his family. The man is Jack Napier, known as "The Joker" (thanks to a bad allergic reaction to acid). In the mean time there's Vicky Vale, a photographer who can't wait to find Batman's true identity. So... there was a little summary of Batman, and now, let's close this paragraph and go on to the next.

Elvis Presley died on my birthday in 1977. The same week in 1955 he released his first number one album. On this date in 1858, the first transatlantic message was sent when the US president, James Buchanan and British Queen Victoria exchanged introductory and complimentary messages .

NOSTALGIA

In this paragraph you're going to find out little things I noticed, (such as who was the president when I was born) when I was going along finding out my stuff. First, I'm going to start with prices. Below you'll see how much things cost on average on August 16th, 1989. House= $124.348.00 Car= $8.243.00 Milk= $2.14 Gas= $1.08 Bread= $1.29 Postage Stamp= $0.25 (a gallon)

These were the prices of things on the day I was born. On that same day the President of the US was George Bush, and the Vice President was Dan (Danforth) Quayle.

Favorite Toys. The toys I liked to play with as a little child were called "My Little Pony". These are little plastic ponies about 4 inches tall and there many kinds of them. Most of the kinds you can braid their hairs. They're very cute, and usually fantasy colors real life ponies could never be (e.g. blue bodies with a pink mane and a pink tail). You would usually get one that has either diamond eyes or normal but also very pretty. I used to love to play with them!

SUMMARY / EVALUATION

Well... this project might have not been so good, but whoever looks at it, I hope it looks good! But anyway, it's over. This is all I know about myself, and you've just read it. I really don't know what to write in this paragraph, so I'll just have to write this: my project is over so I hope you liked it!
