Flat Caroline visits England
Yesterday I slept over at my friends house. After having a lot of fun, we went to bed. She had a bunk bed. I slept at the bottom. In the middle of the night, the bed tipped over, I fell to the ground and the bed tipped over and landed on me. As I sat up, my friend screamed really loud. I was completely flat. It didn't feel an different so it didn't really matter to me. There were some advantages. I could be posted arround the world instead of having to pay a fortune for a plane ticket! A trip to England would only cost about three guilders! I had always wanted to travel alone to England and visit my auntie, uncles and cousins. Now I had a perfect chance.I had of cource read the book called Flat Stanley, but I didn't really believe that a person could be completteley flat. Now I had proved it. I would travel to Canterbury, England the following weekend and I was really exited. I wondered how I would survive about four days in the mail, so I decided to bring a sandwich and a little milk. If I got bored I could also bring a book. The big day was coming closer and the departure was only a couple of minutes ahead. They only had to drive me to the post office. Day 1 The post man delivered me to the right adress. Longacre 21. I had been waiting for quite a long time before I heard some footsteps. Luckly my parents had made some small holes in the envelope, so I could breathe and see if something happened. It was the neighbours dog called Spikey. I had met him several times before. He was a white golden retriver. He was sweet. He thought it only was a normal letter, so he bit me in the arm trying to carry me over the fence. I screamed, and he got so frightened that he ran away.I started reading my book called, "A trip to the past". I had read the book once before. It was a good book. When I had reached page 36, I heard someone oening the door. I knew that it was my aunt, because she was a teacher and she used to come home for lunch every day. I said: "Hi Auntie Fad!" She got really frightened and thought she only was day dreaming.
"Don't be afraid," I said. She thought it was a ghost and her face had turned white as chalk. I started expalaining about what had happed, and after a while she opened the envelope. She could hardly believe that it was possible to get flat. She gave me a tuna sandwich which tasted delicious. I have never really been fond of tuna, but I quite liked this one actually. Suddenly two boys entered the door. They were my two cousins. Phillip was 14, and James was the same age as I. I had to tell them the flatty business again. First they thought it was a cardboard model of me and with some recording inside, but after a while they believed me. They had been shopping, that's why they had been so late. It was eight o'clock and time for bed. I sleapt in the living room. Quite comfortable actually! Tomorrow I would come with my aunt to her school. Good fun I thought. Day 2
Wake up! My aunt was standing over me. You'll be late for school! I had forgot all about it and I had to hurry! I ate breakfast faster than I had done before. I was going to visit Blean Primary School, Auntie Fad's workplace. There was no more spaces in the car, so I had to ride on the window screen--a very fun experience. The wind was blowing against my face, and I was cold. I fell of half way. I tried to grab onto the windscreen wipers, but the wind was too strong. I was blown onto the pavement. Auntie Fad had to stop the car to collect me. I had goten all muddy, and my new pants were dirty! Oh no! But now we were late for school so we had to hurry. We reached Blean Primary School just in time before the bell rang. I was really excited. Finally I was going to meat Mrs. Tricker, the class teacher and all the four and a half to five year old children.
They started entering the class room. You would probably ask why is Auntie Fad here when Mrs. Tricker is the class teacher She's the assistant. I was there the whole day, helping them to do their work. I helped Kayla, a girl in the class do her maths. She was very pleased. They were also learning the alphabet, and today they were learning the letter D. They were very good spellers. Most of them already knew the alphabet. The time went fast, and I didn't realize it was the end of school. That was a very fun day I had had. Auntie Fad had to walk them to the bus. On the left you can see a picture of me with an American girl called Kayla who is going to stay in England only for this term before she returns to America in March. On the right is a picture of me with Kayla beside an old English cab. Day 3 Today I went shopping with my auntie at Sainsbury's. It was my favourite shop, and I love English food--especially their cereal! We spent a long time in Sainsbury's since I hadn't been there for a while. By the time we were done, it was late and it was time to pick my cousin up at the train station arriving from Favershann, a 15 minute ride from Chestfield.
When we came back to Longacre 21, we had to clean the house and prepare the dinner for Uncle Dave, Philip and James. I helped Auntie Fad clean. While I was cleaning the bathroom floor, the brush fell on top of me. I got stuck and I screemed for help. Luckly Auntie Fad heard me. She came runinng and helped me out. We were going to eat Tabule, which is a type of salde my grandma has taught her. It was my favourite meal. It had cracked wheat and lemon over it and tastes delicious. After the tablule we were going to eat wine leaves, which is my favourite meal. You take a kind of leaves (I don't know what type) Then you fill them with rice and a tiny bit of meat. It took a long while to make it, so by the time we were done, every one was sitting by the dinner table ready to eat.
Day 4 The next day was Saturday, and we could all visite auntie Mary in Newcastle. Nanny would also come since she only lives a street away. But not only her! My aunt, uncle and cousin had come all the way from Libya. My cousin is three years old. Her name was Georgia. We set off at 10 am for Newcastle after having picked up all the relatives. We had to crunch up in the car. Luckly they didn't have to bother with me because I was completelly flat. Finally we reached Newcastle after a 5 and a half hours of a long ride. We stopped in Gateshead where my Uncle Ian was born. Auntie Mary was my dad's aunt. She is 85 years old. Afterwards we all went to the local fish and chips store. What a lovely smell. Vinegar and Ketchup. Yummm! After a timred car ride home, we finally reached Longacre 21. The next day it was the time for me to get posted back. Day 5 They had bought a new envelope. My food this time was: a bottle of water, wine leaves and tabule. Yummm! They put me in the envelope and drove me to the post office. Now I was gone. I had had a lovely but short stay. On my way back, I thougt about how I could make myself normal again. I thought and thought, but I didn't come to a solution. Suddenly I thought of an idea, My brother could pump me up to normal size with a bicycle pump! Before I had realized it, I was back in Holland. My whole family started asking me about my journy. I decided to tell them if they promised to blow me up. It worked! Now I am back to normal. I wrote this journal to tell you that it is actually possible to go flat, and please believe it. |
