    Welcome to our
    Folk Tales Project

    What is the
    Folk Tale Project?

    by Akiko & Dave.

During the fourth quarter in Language Arts, students have been listening to folk tales in groups. Each group chose their own name and worked together on most of the activities. The aim was that each person in the group would read at least five folk tales which would then be shared with the group. The group had to read stories from as many different countries as possible. As well as reading folk tales in books we found in the school library and in the classrooms, students were also encouraged to read books from home in their own languages. One assignment during the project was that students had to ask their parents to tell them a story they heard when they were children.

After stories had been collected and shared, students began writing their own original folk tales - at first in groups and then individually. These stories are here for you to read. Please remember that a large number of the students in the class do not have English as their first language, some of the students, in fact, have only been at school for a few weeks, and arrived unable to speak or write English at all. They have written what they could and other members of their group have edited their stories.

The culmination of this project is that the students themselves will become storytellers. They have all chosen their favourite story and will be telling it to a class of 3rd Graders.
