Writing The Maya had their own writing system, and could write or make sentences or stories. The Maya words were pictures called hieroglyphics and each picture had its own meaning. Some hieroglyphics cover whole cities and temples. Some Maya people knew one or two hieroglyphics although priests and nobles could read them all.

Calendars: The Maya were very good astronomers they could figure out when the weather was favorable and when it was bad. They would also know when it was best for planting or harvesting crops. They would even know how long the planet Venus would take to travel around the sun. Most of this was possible with their calendars.

The solar year was 365 days which was divided into 18 months of 20 days each with 5 unlucky days at the end of the year. There was a second calendar made for religious proposes which had 260 days..

The Maya even invented their own numeral system, which used base 20.
