CLIMATE In the summer it is pleasant (10-15C). Long sleeves for mosquitoes. In the winter it is very cold and heavy snow. Hot & dry summers and cold winters in the Northeast. The Southeast has heavy rainfall & semi-tropical summers. Clothes: short sleeves and umbrella. Generally hot and humid (20-40C). Dry season: Jan- June) Wet season monsoons: July-June Tropical. Hot & wet in the lowlands & cities. Cooler in the mountains. Avg. temp 27 C. Avg rainfall 120 inches annually Located between Indian & Pacific Oceans. Interior is hot & barren. Eastern coast is moderate.
CITIES The largest towns in this region are Irkutsk, Novosobirsk, Khabarovsk, and Omsk. Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou Manila, Cebu, Quezon City Jarkata, Padang, Medan, Palembang, Surabaya Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney
VEGETATION Tundra in the North, rolling hills in the south. Lake Baikal has 20% of Earth's fresh water. It is 630 km long, 80 km wide and 1620 meters deep. Diverse begetation from frigid to tropical climates. Over 400 mammal species (including giant pandas), 200 smphibians & 300 different repitles (including alligators) 7100 islands with 37 volcanoes. Half the country is farmed. 13,000 islands with volcanoes. 10% farmland, 2/3's forrested including rainforests & mangrove swamps. Komodo dragons, elephants, tigers & leopards. World's largest flower is "Rafflesia" Sixth largest country in the world with rainforests, deserts, mountains & coastal climate. Local animals: kangaroo, koala, emu, wobat, & dingo. Very poisonous snakes and spiders.
HAZARDS Hypothermia, injury & getting lost Yellow Fever, Malaria (below 1500 meter elevation) Rabies, Cholera, Typhoid Cholera, Hepatitis, Malaria, Rabies & possible rebel (MNLF) violence in Basilan & Sulu. Trnasportation between islands is also difficult. Violence by rebels in E. Timor. Dengue Fever, Giardiasis, Hepatitis, Encephalitis, Malaria, Rabies, Typhoid. Sunburn, Spider Bites, Snake Bites, Shark Attacks
LANGUAGES Russian & local indiginous languages Mandarin, Cantonese & local languages. English is the language of commeerce. Philipino (Tagalog), English, Spanish & local languages. Bahasa Indonesian, 583 local languages, English & Dutch English & Aboriginal languages
FOOD Basic staples include fresh fish and game such as moose and reindeer Northern, Shanghai, Szechuan & Cantonese cuisines (steaming, par broil and stir-fry) Chinese, Malay & Spainish influences. Barbecued fish and meat served with rice and papya & shrimp paste. Chinese influence & local cuisine with rice served with spicy side dishes. Many fruits e.g. guava, mango & starfruit. Beer & BBQ
