Shadow Puppets

    by Saki I.

    A shadow puppet from Indonesia.

In lots of countries, such as Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand, there are shadow puppets. Shadow puppets are puppets made out of a strong cloth, leather, or paper and cut to a shape. To use it you will go behind a white screen and put on the lights facing the screen. The light must be shining from the back where you are using the puppets.

And in India there are some, but not many shadow puppets. In India green is a sign for a hero, god or king. Red or black is a sign for bad guys, and orange is a sign for women and wise people. In India they also have the largest shadow puppets in the world, but to tell the truth I think people can make bigger puppets if they want, so I don't think they could say India has the largest shadow puppets. If people try really hard they can make a really huge puppet, except I don't think anyone would think of trying that.

When I looked at the differences between the New World and Old World puppets I found a few things different about them. I found that New World shadow puppets are brighter in colour, more fashionable characters and thinner material. For the Old World shadow puppets I found that the colour is dull, more traditional characters and that they are made out of thicker material than the New World shadow puppets.

Here is some information about shadow puppets in India.
