A Day at Terra Amata
by Christian M.
Homo Erectus live in Southern France. I was hiding behind a rock when I saw a Homo Erectus band coming to Terra Amata to put up their camp.
They were building their camp out of wood with stones around the side. Every house can fit 20 people. In their houses they can do all sorts of stuff like making tools and cooking meat.
I saw them collecting dandelion leaves, wild wheat, almonds, figs, berries and quail eggs. They also looked in rivers for salmon an harvest seafood from the Mediterranean Sea. They get water from a near fresh water spring. They make tools out of flint like spear heads to cut meat with. They also can make a fire with flint by hitting it on another rock to make a spark.
Homo Erectus people stand on two feet. They hunt for their food. They live in bands. The Homo Erectus cook meat over the fire to make it tastier. Homo Erectus sleep under an animal skin. They warm themselves by a fire in the middle of the wooden hut. This is the kind of meat that the Homo Erectus ate. Deer was the most common one they ate. but they also ate elephants, oysters and turtles. I thought that was very interesting to see for an hour.
Then I saw them make stone tools. Then it was their lunch time. They ate berries and nuts and a little bit of meat.
Homo Erectus look a bit like chimpanzees because they have lots of hair. But the Homo Erectus have a bit bigger brains than the chimpanzees.
Now it is dinner time. They mostly ate meat. Then they went to sleep under their fur blankets. And I went home to my own family.
