Visit to Terra Amata
by Michal C
It all happened late at night when all the lights were off and everyone left already, even the security guards. I crept out of my hiding place and got working on my time achine. I'd been working on it for almost a week, with Mr Spedding the Great Scientist's help, and I was determined to get it working.
My dream always was to invent a time machine that would take me all the way back to when Homo Erectus roamed the Earth, and explore and learn all there is to know about them. Finally I was ready to give my time machine a try. I went inside the time machine.
"Okay, ready, set, go!" Mr Spedding said as he pushed the button that made the time machine do its job. "Take care."
I think Mr Spedding said something else but I didn't hear him because I was on my way to whereever the time machine was going to take me. Suddenly everything went black and I couldn't see a thing. But then I saw little spots in all the colors you could think of, and then the spots turned to lines and then to all kinds of little shapes in all different colors. By now it also seemed like I was flying, because when I tried to find out what was under me, all I could feel was air, air and more air. It was all so bright suddenly and I was so dizzy that I just closed my eyes and when I opened them again I was at a different place. It was daytime.
The first things I saw were the huts. They were built kind of like a slanted roof, but made out of branches and skins and they had rocks and bones to support them. Inside there was a place for a fire in the middle of the hut so that people will stay warm in the night when they sleep around the fire. The hut was big enough for at least 20 people to sleep in.
Homo Erectus used tools that were mostly rocks or made out of rocks or stones. For cutting animals for meat they used a flat stone and they used its surface for shaping their tools.
I spent most of the day looking at how Homo Erectus made tools and played together and how they hunted and what kinds of animals they hunted. I took notes of every single thing that happened during that day so that I could give them to Mr Spedding the Great Scientist. They even showed me how to make tools, it was really interesting.
After the hunt they did a very unusual thing. Maybe it looked unusual to me because I never did that but they danced around the elephant which they had killed, and one man was dancing in the ring of fire in the middle while all the others were acting out the hunt and were throwing their spears at the baby elephant. Then they ate.
The kinds of things they ate were elephants, deer, turtles, oysters. Homo Erectus also ate plants because plants were important for their diet. They also gathered dandelion leaves, wild wheat, almonds, figs, berries and quail eggs. They could spear salmon in the rivers and harvest sea food from the Mediterranean Sea.
When I got back to the science lab Mr Spedding the Great Scientist was waiting for me with an anxious look on his face.
"So how was it?" he asked, impatient to know the answer.
I told him everything that happened and all the information I got. He was very amazed and even wanted to write a story about it. It was very late at night so I had to go home, but all the way home I thought I wonder where my next trip will take me to.
