A Day in the Life of Terra Amanta
      by Saki I.

Our homework today was to write about Homo Erectus. So instead of going to the library and looking for books and getting information I decided to borrow my granddad's Time Door and a sleeper gun. Time is a very useful thing. You just need to think of where you want to go and open the door and go through and there you are! The sleeper gun looks like a normal small gun, except if you shoot it will shoot whatever you want to shoot and make it sleep. Well, I've packed my things, LETS GO!!

I was now in Terra Amata. It was a tiny bit cold. I had to walk around for quite a long time until I spotted what I was looking for - a band of Homo Erectus. I was so delighted to see them that I nearly dashed up to them, but I controlled myself. I hid behind bushes, trees and rocks and followed them around. They walked on 2 feet, just like us, and they were able to walk on 2 feet for a long time.

To hunt they used tools such as a hand-axe. A hand-axe was made out of volcanic ash which had hardened and become stone. They would sharpen it by chopping the sides off with another stone so that it would become sharp. Most of the time it was used to cut animals.

I was following wherever they were going and checking every single thing they did. The day was passing and still they did not go back to their home, but at about 7.30 PM they started to return. I followed them and saw other members of the band of Homo Erectus and found that they lived in caves and huts. A fire was lit near the entrance so no animals would come in.

When I got to the camping place or the home of this band of Homo Erectus that I was following it was about 7.45. This group lived in a hut that they had made from trees. It was quite big and outside they had put stones for protection. I was hiding behind a rock 10 metres away from the band so they would not see me. I used binoculars to see everything that they did.

They started to build up their fires. They set fire to bits of wood and carried them to where they were going to make other fires, because fire cannot be made. Soon they started eating the food they had got. I found that deer meat was the most common but they also ate elephants and other animal meat. They also gathered dandelion leaves, wild wheat, almonds, figs, berries and quail eggs. Also when they were near by to a lake or river they got fish with a spear. And I found that they also harvested sea food.

After their meal one of the men got up and put on the skin of a baby elephant and danced inside the ring of a fire. They suddenly another man got up and got a spear and pretended that he was trying to kill it. Around in the ring the children were watching too. I was very surprised that they did such a thing, but I noticed that this was the way the children learnt how to hunt, so it is very useful.

When the dance finished I slowly crept away and went to my time door and went home.
