The Ocean Project In a similar project, a Dutch university student looks at the link between climate and history in his online presentation Treasures of the Arctic: Dutch Explorers through the Little Ice Age.
Grandparents' Stories: Here is another project from Alderwood Elementary School in the state of Washington (USA). Their project ELECTRONIC ELLIS ISLAND: A VIRTUAL HERITAGE MUSEUM discusses the origins of many of their students' parents and grandparents who are now living in America.
In the United States many people's first point of entry used to be Ellis Island. Here is an online exhibition from the real 'Ellis Island' in New York.
A Day In the Life .. In addition to our families' timelines we have also begun a unit on human origins. We have been studying how people lived in the Stone Age in Europe and have used informatiion from the Museum of Antiquities at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (England). We hope you enjoy your visit to "Flints and Stones: Real life in prehistory " (describing human life during the Late Upper Paleolithic in England and northwest Europe.).
Recently we have discovered other sites which deal with the subject of evolution and human origins. These include The Long Foreground: Human Prehistory and Hunting and Gathering (Professor R. Hooker, Washington State University),
Fossil Hominids FAQ , Guided Tour of Hominid Evolution (Hunterian Museum in Scotland),
Human Origins Exhibition at the Natural History Museum (UK) , and finally some interesting information on Charles Darwin.
Cro Magnon Caves To complement our study of human origins we also discovered a site of cave painting in France. Here is a link to the site "Discovery of a Palaeolithic painted cave at Vallon - Pont-d'Arc (Ardèche)" and to another site in France "The Cosquer cave (Marseille)" There is also information about megaliths in Europe with information on prehistoric peoples in England, Scotland and Ireland at the Stone Pages Web site. There is a student project with additional cave art and information on Art and the Ice Age.
Creation Stories and Myths We found a couple of very nice places on the Web containing collections of creation stories, myths, and folk tales. We read about 'Creation Stories & Traditional Wisdom' from a site in Australia. We also found an impressive collection of folk stories at a site called 'Tales of Wonder' (an archive of folk and fairy tales from around the world, compiled by Richard Darsie in the US) and another a site containing 'Traditional Native American Stories Online' (including several creation stories from the Incas, Aztecs and MicMac peoples). Finally Peter Lelong and his students from Fahan School in Tasmania have put together an excellent collection of resources and stories on their Web pages "Traditional Tales from Around the World".
If you are interested in another project on creation stories you should visit a class project from Princeton, New Jersey entitled 'Creation Mythology: Research, Art and Stories' by Mrs. Thompson's Grade 9 English students.
Puppets There is a lot of helpful and interesting information about puppets on the Web. One which is really helpful is 'The Puppetry Home Page' which links information from around the world on this fascinating subject. In addition to our field trip to the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam, we used the information about puppets from Taiwan, Korea, Japan Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam, and France in designing our pages and writing our projects. There is also an interesting place called 'Traditional Puppetry' about the different techniques used in other countries.
In case you are interested in where we go to school, here is a link to our school's web site for more information on the International School of Amsterdam.
